concrete

blocks

to

construct

a

row

of

partitioned

vats

down

each

side

of

the

greenhouse

which

housed

his

fish
(the

vats

even

had

a

built

in

glass

window

in

the

front

for

viewing

the

fish)

and

above

them

he

had

built

his
grow
beds

out

of

2"

X

2"s

and

plywood

and

lined

them

with

plastic.

He

used

river

gravel

for

media

and

his
veggies

were

growing

like

crazy.

If

you

could

have

seen

my

face

when

I

saw

what

he

and

done,

you

would
have
seen

a

very

surprised

man.

Then

when

he

explained

why

he

had

done

it,

I

was

even

more

amazed

and
in

awe

of

this

new

thing

he

call

Aquaponics.
I

learned

a

lot

from

Codi

the

short

time

I

was

there

and

I

definitely

found

it

all

very

fascinating.

Unfortunately

I
was

transferred

to

another

store

after

about

6

months

and

the

transfers

kept

coming

just

like

clockwork.

Key
West,
West

Palm

Beach,

Daytona;

until

finally

I

tired

of

the

moving

so

I

quit

the

retail

business.

I

had

always
had
the

idea

that

I

would

like

to

try

law

enforcement,

so

I

got

a

job

as

a

Deputy

Sheriff.

Quite

a

drop

in

pay
but

I

had

finally

found

something

that

I

really

enjoyed

doing.

Seemed

as

though

things

were

clicking

just

right
because

that's

when

I

met

a

beautiful

young

lady.

She

immediately

managed

to

steal

my

heart

so

I

figured

I
better
marry

her

if

I

wanted

to

stay

close

to

my

heart.

Right

?

That

was

1974

and

even

though

getting

married
forced

me

to

eventually

move

on

from

law

enforcement,

she

and

I

are

still

together.
My

wife

and

I

moved

to

Jacksonville,

Fl

in

1987

where

I

started

my

own

business.

I

was

able

to

renew

my
friendship

with

Codi

at

that

time

only

to

find

he

had

been

victim

to

a

couple

heart

attacks

by

then.

His

health
was

causing

him

trouble

keeping

his

Aquaponic

system

going.

By

this

time

he

had

added

considerably

more
to

it

so

in

my

spare

time

I

jumped

in

to

help

him

out

and

that's

when

my

education

in

Aquaponics

really

began
in

earnest.
Things

rocked

on

as

usual

until

2007.

Thorough

considerable

research

on

my

part

over

the

years

I,

the
student,
was

quickly

becoming

the

teacher

which

brought

us

to

discussing

our

attending

the

University

of

the
Virgin
Islands

Aquaponic

course.

It

didn't

take

long

with

pencil

and

paper

to

figure

it

out

that

it

would

cost
about

$4,000.

each

for

us

to

go

which

was

a

fortune

to

each

of

us

at

the

time.

I

think

cost

prohibitive

is

the
phrase
I'm

looking

for

here.
We
were

firmly

upset

that

there

were

no

Aquaponic

training

facilities

available

within

the

contiguous

48

states
without

having

to

go

to

a

vacation

island

to

learn

whatever

they

had

to

teach.

It

was

a

continuous

thorn

in

our
sides

and

many

times

we

talked

about

setting

up

our

own

school

but

there

was

still

the

money

thing.

Codi
and
I

had

also

talked

for

years

about

our

dream

of

setting

up

a

commercial

operation

on

his

property

to

raise
tomatoes
and

peppers

and

now

he

had

made

up

his

mined

and

was

determined

to

do

it

as

a

means

to

earn
the

money

to

attend

the

UVI

A/P

course.
Codi
came

up

with

this

idea

to

advertise

to

attract

an

investor/s

for

his

project.

His

brilliant

scheme

was

built
around
advertising

his

opportunity

on

an

Aquaponics

website

internet

forum.

Codi

searched

the

internet

and
found

an

Aquaponics

website

complete

with

forum

in

Australia.

I

was

unaware

of

what

he

had

done

until

it
was

all

over

but

the

shouting

"so's

to

speak".

As

it

turned

out,

by

him

not

being

familiar

with

how

forums
worked,

he

mistakenly

posted

his

offer

to

partner

up

for

a

commercial

venture

in

every

single

topic

on

the
forum.

That's

when

things

went

from

good,

to

bad

to

hysteria.
That,

I

believe

was

the

beginning

of

the

end

of

Codi's

dream

and

possibly

the

cause

of

his

demise.
The

name

of

the

forum

is

unimportant,

however

needless

to

say

the

members

went

berserk.

I

mean

he

was
